Research Paper

For my English class I am doing a research paper in which I write an argument about an issue that matters to me.  For many reasons I have decided to write about transportation in Memphis.  This topic has three main purposes.  The first purpose is the lack of public transportation in Memphis.  This includes buses, trolleys and trains.  Memphis could certainly improve on acquiring some more public transportation.  This option benefits all.  People without cars have a way to get around, people with cars can save gas, and with more people using public transportation, less will be driving in "rush hour traffic."  The second purpose is the high amount of cars driving around Memphis.  With more and more people driving every day, this issue continues to grow.  The more crowded the roads get, the more that people are prone to accidents.  The last issue is the conditions of the roads in Memphis.  This does not just include the conditions of streets because of pot-holes and cracks, it also includes the way the roads are designed.  Examples include how some busy intersections fail to flow traffic properly, and also how some roads are too thin and have no turn lanes for people turning left.  Though these issues are different they all correlate in a way that each problem is a factor of the other problems.  I have decided to write about this issue because it is a problem that my friends, family, and I all have to go through every day.  While driving in Memphis not only are drivers subject to accidents at any time, which means putting their lives at stake, but they are also spending in enormous time driving through traffic and ugly road conditions.  Any driver in Memphis, including myself, understands why this issue is important.  These are the reasons why I have decided to research more about this issue and write an argument about it.

  1. I totally agree with the transportation issue in Memphis. Basically if you do not have a car you cannot really go the independent route. I have many friends that would love to get their own space and move out of their parent’s wing but the lack of transportation means makes that impossible. Also it would keep a lot of bad drivers off the road especially during dangerous weather, snow hail, and heavy rains. The roads here in Memphis are just terrible. I will say that there is more construction now then there has ever been in the last 6 years that i have been in Memphis. The city of Memphis was a beautiful place let’s use Elvis Presley as an example. That was a very touristic area and now it looks worse than Lamar Street.

  2. I second your argument. Apart from occasional bus stops, there's really no effective way to travel around the city besides car. I live in Olive Branch and have a 40 minute (at best) drive to campus. If my car breaks down, there's not much to do besides possibly call for assistance or fix minor issues. Awkwardly placed merges and depressingly large amounts of traffic are a constant part of our daily commute. If the streets aren't changed to accompany an increasing influx of cars over time, there could be a problem. More advanced cities like New York City have greater availability public transportation, but I suppose that's what makes Memphis so special. We choose to do our own thing and resist change at any opportunity. After all, who needs progress anyway?
